Where do Presbyterian churches come from?
Geneva, Switzerland
What is the basic message of the Bible?
God created the world good. Humans messed it up. God came in Jesus to set things right.
Can we prove God exists?
The Bible doesn't prove God exists; it assumes it. Our personal faith in the God of the Bible is the strongest "proof" of the reality of God.
Where was Jesus before he came to earth?
Because Presbyterians believe in one God, eternal and triune; and because we believe Jesus is a part of that triune God, we believe Jesus has always existed with God.
What does the Holy Spirit do?
Being a part of the triune God, it witnesses to the truth of God in Jesus Christ by speaking to humans in many ways - the Bible, prayer, dreams, that inner voice, other people.
Where did Presbyterian churches come from in the United States?
Scotland and France
What do we mean when we say the Bible is the inspired Word of God?
God used people, throughout history, living in their own times and places, to write down God's revealed messages to the world. How God did this is a mystery.
How can we can "know" God?
Through general revelation - knowing God by what we see in the natural world; and special revelation - knowing God through the life of Jesus Christ and the Bible's witness to that life.
What is the Presbyterian belief about the virgin birth?
Some see it as historical fact while others see it as a symbol marking God's grace given to us. It is what marks the beginning of Jesus' incarnation and life on earth.
What is the baptism of the Holy Spirit?
Presbyterians believe it signifies the power of new life given to us at the time of our water baptism, but not that we must exhibit special gifts as proof we have received it.
What is The Reformation?
The movement Martin Luther began that criticized and questioned the Biblical beliefs and practices of the 16th Century Roman Catholic Church.
What do we believe about the Bible having errors in it?
Even if here are historical or scientific errors in the Bible, it is still trustworthy and reliable as a source of "God" knowledge and how God wants us to live.
What is the Trinity?
One God revealed in three unique and equal persons, showing us God's pattern for humans to live in loving relationship with each other.
What is the reason for Jesus coming into the world?
To open the way for humans to have a relationship with God. We couldn't do it for ourselves and the Jewish Law couldn't do it either.
What is reformed theology?
We can never claim to know absolute Christian truth because God is always leading us to greater insights and deeper truths from Scripture.
What is the purpose of the Old and New Testaments?
The Old Testament shows us God as revealed in God's interactions with the nation of Israel. The New Testament shows us God as revealed in the person of Jesus of Nazareth.
What part does God play in evil and suffering in the world?
All that God creates is good. Evil happens when God is absent, or shut out of, a given situation.
What is the meaning of the Cross?
It shows that Jesus' complete surrender to God's will and utter love for humans won the battle against humans' greatest enemy - death.
What is the difference between Presbyterians and Baptists?
We believe children are baptized as a sign of being welcomed into God's family; they believe only those who are old enough to make a profession of faith can be baptized.
Do Presbyterians believe in a literal Adam and Eve?
Biblical scholars have shown us that there are different kinds of literature in the Bible. Some parts of the Bible are historical, and tell us historical truths. Other parts are theological, and tell us spiritual truths. Many Presbyterians believe the stories about Adam and Eve and Creation are theological truths.
What is God's gender?
Even though Jesus calls God 'daddy,' God is not mortal. God is neither male nor female; but, according to Jesus and the Bible, is spirit.
What is the resurrection? Is it true?
Like the virgin birth, some scholars say it is historical fact while others say it is a symbolic expression of God's grace. Without it there would be no salvation for us.
