What is transgender?
An umbrella term for people whose gender identity does not match the sex they were assigned at birth.

What is top surgery?
Colloquial phrase to describe gender affirming surgery of the chest — either bilateral mastectomy or breast augmentation.

What is outing?
Exposing someone’s lesbian, gay, bisexual transgender or gender non-binary identity to others without their permission.

What is transition?
An individualized process in which transgender people move from living aligned with the sex they were assigned at birth to living aligned with their gender identity.

What is hormone replacement therapy?
The process in which transgender people choose to take a prescription of synthetic hormones. For transgender women, that may include estrogen as well as testosterone blockers. For transgender men: testosterone (T).

What is pansexual?
Describes someone who has the potential for emotional, romantic or sexual attraction to people of any gender though not necessarily simultaneously, in the same way or to the same degree.

What is cisgender?
A term for people whose gender identity generally matches the gender assigned for their physical sex.

What are feminizing treatments?
Strategies (whether aesthetic, medical or surgical) that produce physical changes typically defined as feminine.

What is an ally?
A term used to describe someone who is actively supportive of LGBTQ+ people.

What is male to female transgender person or trans woman?
Someone assigned the male gender at birth who identifies on the female spectrum.

What is phalloplasty?
A bottom surgery that creates a neo-phallus for men of transgender experience.

What is queer?
A term people often use to express a spectrum of identities and orientations that are counter to the mainstream.
Often used as a catch-all to include many people, including those who do not identify as exclusively straight and/or folks who have non-binary or gender-expansive identities. This term was previously used as a slur, but has been reclaimed by many parts of the LGBTQ+ movement. |
What is nonbinary or genderqueer?
People whose gender identity and/or gender expression falls outside the binary categories of man and woman.

What is metoidioplasty?
A surgical procedure that works with existing genital tissue to form a phallus, or new penis. It can be performed on anyone with significant clitoral growth caused by using testosterone.

What is intersex?
A subset of the somatic conditions known as disorders of sex development in which chromosomal sex is inconsistent with genital sex, or in which the genital or gonadal sex is not classifiable as either male or female.
