They both have their hearts and eyes fixed on worldly possession and power. Christian notes, "'By-Ends and silver Demas are one and the same. When one calls, the other runs so that he may share in his profit. So even though these two may do well in this world, they will go no further'" (Bunyan 149). This shows that By-Ends and Demas share the same nature: greed and covetousness, which may profit them in this world, but will cost them everything in the next.
