Weathering
The breakdown of a rock into sediments is called ___________________.
100
Sedimentary, Metamorphic and Igneous
What are the 3 types of rocks?
100
A solid aggregate that is made up of minerals and other nonliving things
What is the definition of a rock?
100
Color, luster, hardness and streak
What are the 4 properties that we used to describe minerals?
100
A rapid change
What type of change is a volcanic eruption?
200
Deposition
When sediments are dropped off in a new place, this is called _________________.
200
Pressure
How is a sedimentary rock formed?
200
A pure substance that is made naturally within the Earth
What is the definition of a mineral?
200
It means the mineral is shiny like metal (think: Aluminum foil!)
What does metallic mean?
200
It expands and cracks the ground even more
What happens to ice when it freezes within a crack on the ground?
300
Erosion
The movement of sediments to a different place is called ______________.
300
Extreme Heat
How is an igneous rock formed?
300
Rocks are made of minerals. Minerals are pure!
What is the difference between rocks and minerals?
300
Identify minerals
What do we use color, luster, hardness and streak to do?
300
A slow change
What type of change do ocean waves make on the Earth?
400
Weathering breaks down rocks into sediments and erosion takes those pieces to different places.
How do weathering and erosion work together?
400
Heat and Pressure
How is a metamorphic rock formed?
400
TRICK QUESTION! Rocks don't have a specific shape!
What type of shape do most rocks have?
400
Soft
If a mineral is able to be scratched by your fingernail, is it considered hard or soft?
400
Answers will vary!
Give 1 example of a rapid change to the Earth and 1 example of a slow change to the Earth.

Break, move, drop.
Break, move, drop.
All of these processes happen to a rock.
Break, move, drop.
Weathering BREAKS it
Erosion TAKES it
And when the motion stops, deposition DROPS.
Sing the "weathering and erosion" chant without making a mistake. Your name will go on the Bingo Board if you do the dance at the same time ;)

Weathering breaks the rock down into sediments.

Those sediments get compacted and cemented into a sedimentary rock - TONS of pressure!

Within the Earth, that rock gets heated up and is put under lots more pressure. This forms a metamorphic rock.

That metamorphic rock gets put in extreme heat within the Earth and it turns into an igneous rock.

That rock is then weathered and the cycle begins again!
Walk us through the rock cycle, beginning with an igneous rock being broken down into sediments by weathering.
500
Crystalline structure
What type of structure does a mineral have?
500
Moh's Scale of Hardness
What is the name of the hardness scale that we used in class?
500
The ocean pushes up against cliffs and creates an indent over time
How does water cause the weathering of the Earth? Give an example.
