---|---|---|---|---|
What is the perineum?
the space between the anus (or where it should be) and scrotum in a male, or between the anus (or where it should be) and the vulva in the female
|
What is the ascending colon?
the first main part of the large intestine, which passes upward from the cecum
|
What is a stimulant laxative?
An oral drug to encourage bowel movements by acting on the intestinal wall.

What is fecal impaction?
A large lump of dry, hard stool that is stuck in the colon or rectum.
|
What is a cystoscopy? FYI the camera is called a cystoscope.
A procedure to look into the bladder by inserting a thin camera through the urethra.
|
What is the large intestine?
An organ that includes the cecum, the colon, the rectum, and the anus?
|
What is the transverse colon?
the middle part of the large intestine, passing across the abdomen
|
What is an osmotic laxative?
A medication that draws water into stool.
|
What is a Ladd's procedure? FYI the 'bands of tissue' are called Ladd's bands.
A procedure in which intestinal malrotation is corrected. In this procedure bands of tissue pressing on the intestine are cut and the intestine is moved to a better position.

What is exstrophy repair?
A procedure that closes the bladder and the abdomen and repairs the urethra and outer sex organs.
|
What is the rectum?

poor colonic motility (in patients without ARM or HD) leading to constipation with symptoms such as distension, abdominal pain, early satiety and soiling
|
What is bladder neck reconstruction?
A surgery to prevent urinary incontinnce in which a vertical strip of the bladder neck (the muscle that opens and closes to empty the bladder) is opened and then sewn back up making a narrower passage. This narrower passage increases resistance helping prevent urine from leaking.
|
What is Deflux of the bladder neck?
A procedure in which Deflux (hyaluronic acid/dextranome) is injected into the wall of the bladder where the ureter joins the bladder. The gel forms a bulge that acts like a valve, making it harder for urine to flow backwards.
|
What is the colon?

|
What is an ileostomy?
A surgery in which the small intestine is diverted through an opening in abdomen.
|
What is pseudo-incontinence?
A term for when a patient becomes so constipated that stool overflows (out the anus).
|
What is bladder neck sling?
A surgery in which tissue placed around the bladder neck (during bladder neck reconstruction) is pulled up like a sling and attached to more tissue on the pubic bone to create a kink or bend in the urethra that makes it harder for urine to leak down the tube on its own.
|
What is a vesicostomy?
A procedure in which a small opening is made in the lower abdomen (usually just below the belly button) to allow urine to drain out from a child’s bladder. This usually is done when an infant or young child has problems emptying their bladder. A doctor does the procedure to try to stop the kidneys from being damaged by the urine flowing back to the kidneys (refluxing). This is usually a temporary and reversible measure that is done to protect the kidneys until the underlying cause of the problem is corrected. The urine usually just drains into the child’s diaper rather than being collected in a bag.
