What is a multiplexer?
A special box in the communications room to which the demarc extension attaches
What is a raceway?
Cable organizing device that adheres to walls, making for a much simpler, though less neat, installation than running cables in the walls.
What is a U?
The unique height measurement used with equipment racks
What is a optical time domain reflectometer (OTDR)?
A fiber-optic testing device that determines continuity and indicates the location of a break
What is a class license?
A contiguous chunk of IP addresses passed out by the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA)
What are environmental monitors?
Devices that monitor humidity, temperature, and other environmental factors in a telecommunications room
What is a telecommunications room?
A central location for computer or telephone equipment and, most importantly, centralized cabling.
What is structured cable?
The set of standards established by the EIA/TIA regarding network cabling
What is near-end crosstalk (NEXT)?
Crosstalk (signals crossing from one pair of wires to another pair of wires) that is detectable on the same end of the cable from which the signals originated
What is dotted decimal notation?
Shorthand method for discussing and configuring binary IP addresses.
What is far-end crosstalk (FEXT)?
Crosstalk (signals crossing from one pair of wires to another pair of wires) that is detectable on the opposite end of the cable (the far end) from where the signal originated.
What is a voltage event recorder?
A device that tracks voltage over time by plugging into a power outlet
What is a smart jack?
A network interface unit (NIU) that has additional intelligence that the ISP or telephone company can use to determine if the customer has disconnected from the NIU. Allows the ISP or telephone company to set up a remote loopback for testing purposes
What is a link light?
An LED light on a NIC that tells you the NIC is connected to a hub or switch
What is multicast?
Method of sending a packet in which the sending computer sends the packet to a group of interested computers
What is the main distribution frame (MFD)
The room in a building that stores the demarc, telephone cross-connects, and LAN cross-connects
What is vertical cross-connect?
The main patch panel in a building. The demarc extension connects directly to this panel, which in turn leads to every telecommunications room in the building
What is a punchdown tool?
A tool used when connecting a cable to a patch panel
What is Intermediate distribution frame (IDF)
The room where all the horizontal runs from all the work areas on a given floor in a building come together
What is a routing table?
A list of paths to various networks required by routers. You can build this table either manually or automatically
What is network interface unit (NIU)
A DSL or cable modem that serves as a demarc (see demarc), usually between a private home and an ISP
What is a work area?
The structured cabling name for the end user’s office space where network computers will be set up
What are patch cables
Short (2' to 5') stranded UTP cables that connect patch panels to hubs
What is a cable tester
A device that tests the continuity of cables
What is subnetting?
Taking a single class of IP addresses and chopping it into multiple smaller groups
