The tradition of Groundhog Day is believed to have been started by immigrants of this national origin settling in Pennsylvania.

Groundhog Day is celebrated in Punxatawney PA every year with a festival lasting this many days, and kicking off with a formal Groundhog Ball.

Before the groundhog, German tradition looked to this spiny mammal for predicting the coming of Spring.

The ceremonies are conducted in this German dialect, though Phil himself is said to speak in Groundhogese.

Groundhog Day is believed to have its origin in this Christian holiday where people would bring candles to the church to be blessed.

According to the Punxatawney Groundhog Clubs website, Phil’s titles are Seer of Seers, Prognosticator of Prognosticators, Weather Predictor Extraordinaire, Br’er Groundhog, and this, like the 2004 Nicolas Cage film of the same name.

In celebration of the 100th celebration off Groundhog Day, Punxatawney Phil travelled to Washington DC to meet with this sitting president.

This exclusive group is responsible for carrying on the Groundhog Day traditions, planning the events for the holiday, and the care and feeding of Phil himself.

The first recorded celebration of Grounghog day in the United States took place in this year, the same year the Statue of Liberty was dedicated.
