What is ice?
Water that is frozen into a solid state.

What is the difference between ice sheets, ice fields, and ice caps? What are alpine and cirque glaciers?
Glaciers are confined by surrounding mountain terrain; when they form in small bowls with steep sides (cirques), they are known as cirque glaciers.
100
What is an iceberg?
Icebergs are blocks of ice that have detached from the main glacier.
200
What is an ecosystem?
A biological community of interacting organisms and their physical environment

What are valley and piedmont glaciers?
Valley and piedmont glaciers originate in the high alpine and terminate on land, if a valley glacier spills out of the mountains, onto the flat foreland, the ice often spreads to form a lobe. Then it is called a piedmont glacier.
300
What is a glacier?
A large, perennial accumulation of ice, snow, rock, sediment, and liquid water originating on land and moving downslope under the influence of its own weight and gravity; a dynamic river of ice.
300
What are tidewater and freshwater glaciers?
Tidewater and freshwater glaciers are formed on land but terminate in bodies of water. They often calve to produce floating chunks of glacier ice known as icebergs.
400
What is a glaciologist?
A person who studies glaciers.
400
What is a rock glacier?
A glacier-like landform that often heads in a cirque and consists of a valley-filling accumulation of angular rock blocks. Rock glaciers have little or no visible ice at the surface. Ice may fill the spaces between rock blocks. Some rock glaciers move, although very slowly
500
What is a moraine?
Materials left behind by a moving glacier

What is the difference between ice sheets, ice fields, and ice caps?
Ice sheets are bigger than ice fields/caps. Ice fields and caps collect at high elevations. Ice fields have mountains and ridges that jut out above the ice and influence its flow. Ice caps submerge the land beneath them, forming a high dome of slow-moving ice that spreads out from its center.
