What is Crime
An act or omission that causes or may cause harm to a person, property or society. Any such act that is criminalised by a law such as the Crimes Act NSW 1900.

What are Categories of crime
The various types of crime that exist at law.

What is Actus reus
The act of committing a crime, the guilty act.

What are Offences against the person
Crimes that cause harm or injury to a person e.g. assaults, murder, manslaughter.

What is Mens rea
The intention to commit a crime, knowing it was wrong to act in that way.

What are Offences against the sovereign
Crimes against the Queen such as treason or threatening the life or safety of the sovereign and attempting to overthrow the government (sedition)

What is a Strict liability offence
A crime where the action is sufficient to be held guilty, no intention (mens rea) needs to be proven e.g. speeding

What is Causation
The concept that without the actions of the accused no crime would have occurred, that the accused caused the crime. Proven by the “but for test”, but for the actions of the accused no crime would have occurred.
