A young Connecticut schoolteacher who was traveling to Georgia in 1793 to be a tutor on a plantation, later coming up with the idea for the cotton gin after learning of the problems cotton planters faced.

Extended in a wide band from South Carolina through Alabama and Mississippi to Texas by the 1850s, slavery unfortunately spreading with it.

Modeled his cotton mill in South Carolina on the mills in Lowell Massachusetts, wanting to encourage industry in the South. Houses and gardens were built for the workers and schools for their children, as well.

A free African American who planned a revolt in 1822, but was betrayed before it began, him and 35 other people executed.

An African American preacher who led a major revolution in 1831, leading his followers through Virginia, killing more than 57 whites. Only after many innocent African Americans were hunted and killed that the whites caught and hung him.
