LAYERS OF THE ATMOSPHERE | ENERGY | GASES | OTHER FACTS |
---|---|---|---|
What is HETEROSPHERE
The gases have many different compositions depending on the altitude in this layer.
What is RADIATION
The transfer of energy by waves through air or empty space.
What is NITROGEN
The most abundant gas in the atmosphere.
What is ATMOSPHERIC PRESSURE
The pressure exerted by the atmosphere on all objects within it.
What is TROPOSPHERE
The lowest layer, which contains almost all of the Earth's water vapor (this is where most weather takes place.)
What is CONDUCTION
The transfer of heat energy from molecule to molecule by contact.
What is OXYGEN and CARBON DIOXIDE
The two gases are necessary for life on earth.
What is PRESSURE
The force (weight) is applied over a unit of area.
What is MESOPHERE
The uppermost limit of the homosphere and the air is very thin, in fact, most meteoroids burn up here.
What is CONVECTION
The transfer of heat energy, through a liquid or gas, by currents.
What is OXYGEN
This gas is needed for living things to perform life functions.
What is THE GREEEN HOUSE EFFECT
The process by which certain gases (principally water vapor, carbon dioxide, and methane) trap heat that radiates from Earth.
What is ATMOSPHERE
The mass of air surrounding a planet.
What is HEAT
Energy that is transferred as a consequence of temperature differences.
What is CARBON DIOXIDE
This gas is needed by plants to produce food through photosynthesis.
What are the troposphere, stratosphere, mesosphere, thermosphere, and exosphere?
The major layers from Earth's surface outward.
What is HOMOSPHERE
The mixture of gases in the air is the same throughout this layer.
What is TEMPERATURE
A measure of the energy of random motion in a substance's molecules.
What is GREENHOUSE GASES
These gases absorb the infrared light the Earth radiates back into space and heats up the atmosphere, regulating the Earth's temperature.
What is the ATMOSPHERE
Protects life on Earth from bombardment by meteors and high-energy radiation from space, it also filters out much of the harmful ultraviolet radiation before it can reach Earth's surface.
