What is a theme?

The character who works against the protagonist in the story

Giving objects and animals human characteristics

What is a flashback?
Action that interrupts the story to show an event that happened at an earlier time.

What is fiction?
It is a false, made-up story

The reason the author has for writing

What is the protagonist?
The main character who must overcome obstacles and resolve the conflict

What is an extended metaphor?
A comparison of two unlike things that continues for more that one line, usually a paragraph or longer.

What is foreshadow?
The use of clues in a story that suggests events that have yet to occur.

What is nonfiction?
It is a true story

What is text evidence?
Supporting a statement with information from the text.

What is the climax?
The point in the story which marks a change for the better or worse for the protagonist with regard to the main conflct.

What is an idiom?
An expression or saying that is not meant literally, for example: "don't let the cat out of the bag".

The repetition of sounds at the beginning of words.

What is a myth?
A traditional story about gods, ancestors, or heroes, told to explain the natural world or the customs and beliefs of a society

A strategy that helps you "think through" questions based on what you can determine from the text that is not directly stated.

What is a hyperbole?
A deliberate, extravagant, and often outrageous exaggeration.

What is an allusion?
A reference to a literary, mythological, or historical person, place, or thing.

A story about a person, wrtiiten by that same person

What is motivation?
The reason that explains a character's thoughts, feelings, actions or behavior. It is WHY someone does what they do.

What is point of view?
The view from which a story is told.

What is an oxymoron?
A form of paradox that combines a pair of opposite terms into a single unusual expression.

What is a symbol?
The use of an object, person, or place that can stand for something larger.
Ex: a shamrock = luck |
What is poetry?
A form of writing that focuses on feelings and emotions, and sometimes tells a story. It can rhyme or have meter and rhythm.
